A great Father’s day craft for Dad! - Picture This, Dad!

Here's a frame Dad will be proud to display.

Supplies Needed:
  • Glue
  • Dry Pasta
  • Craft Sticks
  • Paint
  • Self-adhesive Magnetic Tape
  • Waxed Paper

Directions:
To make a frame, glue eight craft sticks together in pairs; then set the sticks on waxed paper to dry. Glue the pairs together to form a frame. When the glue is dry, glue various types of pasta onto the frame. Again set the frame aside to dry. Brush on tempera paint or spray-paint the frame. When the paint is dry, spray the frame with acrylic finish. Attach a strip of self-adhesive magnetic tape to the back of the frame and it's ready for a pasta-perfect picture. Happy Father's Day!

I love Trash!

June 1st is Oscar the Grouch’s Birthday...in honor of his birthday this month we have included one of Oscar’s favorite songs!

I love Trash
Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here a sneaker that's tattered and worn
It's all full of holes and the laces are torn
A gift from my mother the day I was born
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here some newspaper thirteen months old
I wrapped fish inside it; it's smelly and cold
But I wouldn't trade it for a big pot o' gold!
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I've a clock that won't work
And an old telephone
A broken umbrella, a rusty trombone
And I am delighted to call them my own!
I love them because they're trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love, I love, I love trash!

Rainbow Bubbles

Supplies Needed:
  • Flashlight
  • Dish Detergent or Bubble Solution
  • Clear Plastic Lid
  • Straw

Directions:
  1. Put the lid on top of the flashlight, so that the rim of the lid is up and it makes a dish.
  2. Put some bubble solution or dish detergent and water on the lid. About 1 tbsp should be enough.
  3. Use the straw to spread the bubble solution all over the lid and even on the straw.
  4. Use the dry end of the straw to blow a bubble.
  5. Watch what happens. Blow more bubbles as they pop.

Helpful Hints
  • If you are having trouble seeing it, go to a dark room, or check if your flashlight needs new batteries. The flash in the picture wiped out most of the reflected light and colors.
  • As you are watching the bubble, it will get thinner on top and thicker at the bottom.

Stars and Stripes

Supplies Needed:
  • Sponges
  • Scissors
  • Paint

Directions:
From a sponge, cut out star shapes. Cut another rectangular sponge into 1" strips. Provide children with blue and red paint as well as white paper. Show them pictures of American flags from the original design representing the thirteen colonies to today's design. Let them use sponges to re-create various flag designs. (You might wish to assign each child a different flag, then allow children to practice placing them in chronological order once dry.) After flags have been created, encourage children to create other designs using the stars and stripes.

Helpful Hints
  • If working with young children, you might pour a very thin layer of paint into a styrofoam tray. This helps limit the amount of paint children get on the sponge and also reduces the danger of spills.
